Character Creation

Step 1: Basic Concept

Name

Your character needs a name, something he or she will be known as by the rest of the Chrysanthemum Order and the people of the Empire of Chi'in. If you're stuck for appropriate sounding names this may provide inspiration.

Title

Your character is an important member of the Imperial Government, and as such, requires an official title appropriate to his role and station. Some examples include: Dragon Fisted, Captain of the 3rd Imperial Archers, Scourge of Port Hifume, etc… These are meant to be descriptive, a piece of flavour about your character.

Faction

All the members of the Chrysanthemum Order work for one of the six branches of Government, even if it's limited to driving a cart of rice for the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

How supernatural can my character be?

While the vast majority of the members of the Chrysanthemum Order are normal humans, the Emperor occasionally makes exceptions for certain particularly talented, valuable, or dedicated supernatural entities. Subject to GM approval, you may play one of these supernatural entities provided the following:

  1. Any powers you have are described by appropriate quirks (for example, secret technique to transform to or from a human shape)
  2. You have appropriate weaknesses (for example, mirrors or wood from a peach tree if you're undead)

Beings inherently tied to the Celestial Bureaucracy, such as full-blooded gods, demons and dragons are automatically out, as are things that don't fit into the flavour, such as space aliens.

Step 2: Skills

Choose Skills for your character. Skills are ranked on a scale from 0 to 6, with higher numbers representing increasing mastery of the skill. At character creation, you have 7 points with which to purchase skills.

Rank Total Cost
0 0 Untrained
1 1 Amateur
2 2 Trained
3 3 Skilled
4 4 Talented
5 N/A Master
6 N/A Transcendental

Levels 5 and 6 are unavailable at character creation. In order to reach them, you will need to find a Master who will teach you and will more often than not demand something in return.

Step 3: Quirks

Choose Quirks for your character. During character creation, you may choose one free positive (+) quirk. You may then take up to three additional positive quirks, each of which must be balanced out by a negative quirk (-).

Step 4: Details

Flesh out your character with a bit of a backstory. Things to consider:

  • Where they're from
  • Where they're going
  • What their goal is
  • How they took the news of the Emperor's death and what it means for them

Step 5: Done

Quick Guide

  • Distribute 7 Skill points
  • 1 free positive Quirk
  • Up to 3 additional positive quirks, each of which must be balanced out by a negative quirk
  • Choose a Faction
  • If you have taken the Martial Arts skill then specify your specialisation and let us know what it looks like when you fight.
