Zhushen Yu is a retired general who over a decade ago commanded the Imperial Army of the Black Tortoise in the North. Since his retirement he has been allowed some involvement in Army affairs, but has mostly been left to his own devices with an appointment to the Order of the Chrysanthemum. It seems that the younger, brighter stars of the Army are not so keen on the meddling of old men.
Nevertheless the prestige and importance of Zhushen Yu is known across the land and legends still linger about accomplishments long past. Notable among them is a story of Yu overcoming an assault by Northern barbarians where faced with overwhelming force and stranded on the other side of the mountain passes during winter. Yu outmanoeuvred the horse barbarians and, so it is said, ordered the army to strike at the snows blocking the pass which unleashed an avalanche and cleared a way for him to retreat to a garrison and face the enemy from a position of strength.
